The Assistant Vice President -and-amp; Controller is responsible for the overall accounting and financial activities of the University, and is a key strategic partner in realizing Ohio Wesleyan University's goals and ambitions for the future. As a member of the senior management team in the Office of Finance and Administration, this position is also responsible for training, developing, managing and coordinating the work efforts of the staff within the Accounting Department and providing financial support across the University. Additionally, this position frequently interacts with and provides information and expertise directly to the University President -and-amp; Officers on matters pertaining to the financial operations and health of the University. This is a full-time, twelve-month, exempt position, which reports to the Vice President for Finance -and-amp; Administration and supervises more than 10 employees. The Controller manages all aspects of the University's financial services functions while maintaining a system of internal controls that will ensure that University assets are adequately safeguarded and that all financial reporting is prepared in compliance with appropriate financial policies and GAAP. The Controller maintains accurate and detailed financial records and oversees all of the University's fiscal related activities. The Controller is primarily responsible for the supervision of the Business Office / accounting functions which includes general ledger accounting, cashiering, accounts payable, student accounts receivable, grants accounting, asset accounting, cash management, purchasing, annual financial reporting, audit preparation, and internal control review and compliance. In addition, the Controller assists the Vice President for Finance -and-amp; Administration in maintaining, developing and implementing university policies and procedures. Minimum Qualifications: - A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field is required for this position. - An MBA and/or CPA is preferred. Seven or more years of progressively responsible accounting and finance experience, preferably in higher education or a complex non-profit organization, which includes managing a professional staff, is required for this position. - An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Required knowledge, skills and abilities: - Deep knowledge of fund-based accounting, reporting and budgeting. - Solid experience coordinating audit activities. - Previous successful supervisory experience, including the ability to manage -and-amp; motivate a high performing team to produce within tight timeframes. - Solid knowledge of ERP and other business systems and procedures to support internal control and external reporting and compliance requirements (preferably Microsoft Dynamics GP, Sunguard PowerCampus, Blackbaud RE, and/or ADP). - Strong analytic and problem solving skills. - Strong oral, listening, and written communication skills.
