Responsibilities: News Editor, Science (Req. #0000) (Full Time) Location: Washington DC The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) seeks a highly experienced science journalist to serve as the News Editor of Science, the Associations flagship weekly journal. The successful candidate will be a person with the vision, leadership, and interpersonal skills needed to keep the award-winning news department of Science at the pinnacle of science journalism, at a time when major changes are sweeping through the news and publishing businesses. She or he will have the foresight to identify and seize upon opportunities that arise from those changes and be able to work collegially as a member of the Science Management team on planning for the future of Science. Reporting directly to the Editor-in-Chief and working with the Chief Executive Officer, Publisher, and Executive Editor, the News Editor will sit on the Associations Senior Management Group and Science Management Group. The News Editor directs all activities of the News department of Science, both in print and online; manages a multinational staff of approximately twenty-five persons, including writers, contract writers, editors, copy editors, and support staff; oversees bureaus in Europe and Asia; and works with several dozen freelance contributors around the world. Major Responsibilities: Plans, coordinates, and manages Sciences news coverage, including news, analysis, features, and special reports in the weekly print magazine; breaking news stories on Sciences online sites ScienceNow and ScienceInsider; and coverage of careers issues on the Science Careers web site Works with a team of writers and editors to conceptualize stories and commission articles from staff and freelance writers Edits and top edits articles, to ensure that they are timely, well-written, accurate, and appealing to target readers, and that controversial issues are reported appropriately Works with editors and the art department to ensure that articles are well illustrated and laid out in an appealing and eye-catching manner, and with an online team to add multimedia enhancements to articles where appropriate Coordinates with Editorial, Business, and Promotion departments to plan new initiatives and ensure that joint objectives are met Keeps all members of the AAAS leadership team apprised of the status of departmental initiatives Determines resource allocation within department and monitors departmental budgets on an ongoing basis Performs internal management functions, including setting departmental goals, establishing incentive programs, overseeing staff development and professional growth, developing performance objectives and conducting performance reviews, among other human resource-related duties Qualifications: A Bachelors or Masters degree in journalism or related field Fifteen or more years of experience in progressively responsible positions writing and editing scientific material for a daily, weekly, or monthly publication, including five years of management experience Demonstrated expertise in news editing and writing, layout and art conception, and publications production Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to communicate with the scientific community and policy makers Demonstrated knowledge of science related issues and research Ability to interpret complex scientific information and present it in a clear and interesting manner Effective budgeting, organizational, and management skills
