Controller Institution: Location:San Antonio, TX Category:Admin - Business and Financial Services Posted: 01/15/2013 Application Due:Open Until Filled Type:Full Time SUMMARY: Reporting to the Vice President for Finance and Administration (VPFA), the University Controller serves as the chief accounting officer for the University and is responsible for the leadership and management oversight of accounting, financial reporting and financial internal control operations of the University. Areas of oversight include: accounting, interim and annual financial reporting, student accounts receivables, cashiering, accounts payable, payroll, fixed assets, plant funds, sponsored projects, endowments and similar funds and development and maintenance of sound internal control systems over financial operations. The Controller is the primary liaison with the external auditor and, working with the VPFA, prepares annual and periodic financial reports and analyses. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - Develops and maintains the University's financial accounting system to account for the receipt and expenditure of all funds and to report operating results to the administration and external agencies in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), government regulations and industry best practices. Maintains the chart of accounts, including the determination of proper classification of accounts. - Coordinates the annual audit of the independent CPA firm in accordance with GAAP, including coordination of the Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees. Responsible for preparation of financial statements and footnotes, supporting schedules and analyses, and in providing auditors with all requested documentation as required. Ensures the annual receipt of an unqualified opinion on the financial statements for presentation to the University's Board of Trustees. - Responsible for professional presentation and timely and accurate reporting to the IRS and other external agencies. This includes coordinating the 990/990T tax returns and working closely with internal and external parties in its preparation. - Works closely with the VPFA, the Director of Financial Aid and the Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees in maintaining a strong financial and internal control environment. With the Director of Financial Aid, is responsible for completion of the University's annual A-133 audit. - Provides overall supervision to a staff of professional and technical personnel as well as student assistants. Provides guidance, organization, and training in all aspects of Business Office operations. Sets and meets efficient and effective goals and strategies for the department while maintaining a strong internal and external quality service focus. Evaluates and documents the performance of assigned staff and coaches them as appropriate. - Develops, administers and oversees the preparation of annual financial statements the annual operating budget for Endowments and Business Office. JOB REQUIREMENTS: - A BAin accounting or business and CPA designation - At least six years of progressively responsible experience in the finance division of a higher education institution is strongly preferred - Proficient in complex accounting systems (Datatel experience highly preferred) - Related internal control environment, effective communication, leadership, and management skills - Requires accuracy and good business judgment - Ability to supervise and work with people - Strong interpersonal, communication, analytical, organizational, and technology skills - Effectively interact with a diverse group of faculty, staff, administration, students, and other constituencies - Must be able to learn and use operating practices of the department and Trinity University - A strong positive representative of Trinity University with prospective, former and current students, clients, suppliers and the community we serve - A demonstrated commitment to customer service - Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations, and accounting standards for universities and not-for-profits is preferred - Experience working with Federal awards/contracts is highly desirable Trinity University offers attractive benefits.
